Rob Ford and the Future of Toronto.

WARNING: Political cartooning.

Stuck in bed with the flu so I drew this on my iPad last night. Today I saw that Rob Ford had admitted to "probably" smoking crack and that he will not step down. Obviously I can't draw fast enough to keep up with the man.

Rob Ford needs help and the support of his family. Addiction is serious...maybe that's part of why I'm so fascinated by him. He represents so many human foibles all rolled into one package. And lampooning is a coping mechanism: if we don't laugh, we cry.

But his substance abuse problems and atrocious behavior are not what's bad for the people of Toronto. It's his policy of austerity that will do the most damage.

    1. I'm happy to oblige Annabelle. I don't usually venture into the Land of Politics, but lately, in Canada, it's been more entertaining that anything.

Not sure if that's a good thing.

  2. At some point it's not a "personal demons" issue and it's more of "I'm a sociopathic narcissist taking advantage of my position" and doesn't deserve the sympathy you were so overly generous to extend to Ford. The grab-ass alone solidified his status as a relentless, unrepentant jackass. But it was kind of you to offer that olive branch anyway.

    1. I think you're right - this guy exhibits all the traits of a personality disorder. Which is one thing (especially coupled with substance abuse and addiction issues. What I'm trying to express is another thing altogether and not to be confused with an olive branch.

With this cartoon, I wish to point out that all that crap that he does is besides the point - he's a terrible mayor because dismantling good social programming is bad for everyone. The poor, racialized and marginalized are directly affected by his policies and service cuts, and this in turn ripples out into society and humanity over the years. We all suffer.

It's a huge problem at every level of governance.

  3. Well done. I frankly didn't know enough about all the rest of his horrors until I read this. You're just as good for my news gathering as the Daily Show.

    1. The scandal that follows him is besides the point. He's a terrible mayor because he makes bad decisions for real people and has done so from the start.

All humor aside (and we do need humor), I thought the Daily Show made a really good point at the end with the ridicule VS eulogy point.
